Anxiety and Depression

by James Berdhof ~ April 10th, 2009

Anxiety and depression are two separate conditions. The exact relationship between the two is still under study.

Even though its very common to find them together, any direct relationship to each other has yet to be found. For the time being, the relationship between anxiety and depression is often referred to as comorbidity.

Meaning unrelated but co-existing. Their symptoms can overlap each other, which can make the initial diagnosis of either condition difficult. The symptoms can also be completely independent of each other.

A study by the National Comorbidity Survey reported that 58% of patients suffering major depression also exhibited lifetime anxiety. Agitated depression and akathitic depression are most often referred to when supporting these results.

Both of these depressed states exhibit anxiety with heightened restlessness, suicidal thoughts or tendencies and a general sense of dread. While agitated depression includes symptoms of nonclinical and nonspecific panic, akathitic depression doesnt.

Even mild anxiety symptoms are being found to have an impact on the course depression takes in individuals.

A study at the University of Pittsburg showed patients diagnosed with depression and also suffering lifetime panic symptoms experienced significant delays in the success of their treatments.

These patients also exhibited additional problems when facing the resumption of their normal activities.

There are theories regarding the possibility that depression acts similar to anxiety in attempting to encourage avoidance of potentially harmful situations. Anxiety tries to avoid and prepare for physical danger, while depression tries to avoid emotional or psychological danger.

Your Circadian Rhythm -Friend Or Foe?

by Harold Ulvaeus ~ April 10th, 2009

Your internal clock, or circadian rhythm, is closely connected to many forms of insomnia. Contrary to popular belief, circadian rhythm has more to do with the levels of light than the time of day. This internal clock is what tells us when to go to sleep, and when to wake up in thew morning.

The circadian rhythm IS the internal clock. These rhythms are to some degree governed by hormones secreted by endocrine glands throughout the day. And our body temperature and overall mental acuity and alertness are only some of the factors affected by the circadian rhythm.

The circadian rhythm is partially responsible for us feeling sleepy or sluggish with low energy, certain times during the 24 hour cycle, and for having abundant energy other times during the cycle. Those with a sleeping disorder related to their circadian rhythm tend to feel tired when they should be alert and vice versa. Those working the night shift tend to suffer from this type of sleep disorder.

One of the biggest factors in regulating your circadian rhythms is how much exposure you get to very bright light, especially sunlight. When you don’t get enough light over a long period of time, such as during the winter, you may notice that you tend to feel more fatigued or have less energy when compared to the spring and summer.

Correcting sleep disorders caused by, or related to, your circadian rhythm can be done by light therapy specially designed to slowly reset your circadian rhythm. The light is delivered from what is called a “light box” which has the correct wavelengths of light. 30-60 minutes of exposure to the light in conjunction with a strict sleep schedule explains the therapy.

To be successful with the light therapy the most important aspect is to time the light exposure correctly.Proper timing will be based on not only your schedule but also the type of insomnia.

Caring For Your Skin After A Facial Chemical Peel

by Tish Bolton ~ April 10th, 2009

Everything good in life comes at a price or trade off, if you will. It could be the indulgence at the dessert bar and its associated weight gain or the beautiful home in the suburbs and the hour-long commute that comes with it. Just because we understand that there is a cost associated with everything in life doesnt mean we cant try to negotiate.

The same can be said for chemical face peels. There are going to be side effects, even if you use the lightest chemical peels available on the market today. However, you can take steps to minimize the effects of chemical face peels on your skin.

Who better to ask about chemical face peels than someone who spent years specializing on dermatology and has a PhD in it? Your dermatologist knows exactly what to do when it comes to taking care of your skin after a chemical face peel, so always listen to him or her. The medicines and steps you need to take to protect your skin usually vary with the chemical peel procedure youve undertaken. Consulting your dermatologist can be your very first step into a successful chemical peel so doesnt take it for granted and think that you can do all things on your own.

The main problems you’re going to be facing with chemical face peels are irritation, swelling, itching and lightening of the skin, especially after treatment. To handle all these problems, you just need to give your face time to heal. It comes naturally with the process, and you’re just going to have to be patient. So if ever you plan to undergo the process, make sure to free up your schedule and give your face the time it needs to heal.

It will be difficult but try your best not to touch your freshly peeled skin any more than is absolutely necessary. The oils, salts and dirt in your skin will easily transfer to your face and can cause unneeded irritation. It might seem strange but touching your skin while it is healing can be one of the worst things you can do.

But your skins sensitivity to the sun is one thing youll have to be mindful of. Young skin is not particularly good at screening out the harmful effects of the suns rays. So applying generous amounts of sun-screen, keeping in the shade and wearing wide-rimmed hats if you have to get under the sun are ways to help aid your sensitive skin as it regenerates.

And thats it. Just follow these four easy steps and you will have made your recovery period as smooth and problem free as possible. Remember that your dermatologist id the person who knows your skin and procedure better than anyone. Follow their directions to the letter and you will be much happier in the long run with your facial chemical peel.

Getting Rid of Internal Hemorrhoids

by Heather-Jane Hunter ~ April 10th, 2009

The condition of internal hemorrhoids comes when the blood vessels inside your anus and rectal canal are inflamed. In most cases, hemorrhoids come in many shapes and sizes that can range from very small to as large as a golf ball. When you do have the larger sizes they can be quite serious.

The most common problem will be seeing blood on the toilet paper or in the stool, or an inability to finish a bowel movement. Feelings of pain when you are having a bowel movement will also give you and indication that you may have an internal hemorrhoid.

While there seems to be very little scientific reasoning behind the development of hemorrhoids, the problem of internal hemorrhoids can be quite common to sufferers. The usual problems are hard stools, constipation, pregnancy, weight lifting, straining and diarrhea.

One of the most common connections to internal hemorrhoids is pregnancy. Many times, soon to be mothers get internal hemorrhoids because of the blood flow and higher blood pressures. Also hemorrhoids may be developed due to the incredible strains a woman may experience in child birth.

Another higher risk situation for hemorrhoids is women and men, who lift weights. This is because of the amount of strain they do while lifting weights. Hemorrhoid prevention tip: In order to have fewer instances of hemorrhoids, be sure that when working out, that you exhale when lifting, and inhale when bringing the weight down.

Another problem known to cause internal hemorrhoids is hard stools which are usually caused when a person is constipated. These problems are usually attributed to the types of foods that the person eats. The stools will them become hard and will apply a huge amount of shearing force within the walls of your anal canal. Tips: To lower instances of having hard stools changing the amount of fiber you get in your diet will go a long way. Try eating more fruit and vegetables to stop the problems associated with internal hemorrhoids.

While diarrhea, doesn’t normally cause hemorrhoids, but long periods of diarrhea may contribute to it. If you do have internal hemorrhoids already it will make the problem worse.

Constipation is one of the most normal causes of hemorrhoids. When you can’t pass your stool, it will cause the stool to harden while it is in the anal passage. At the time passing occurrence, it is hard on the anal passage, which puts stress on the veins in your anus causing internal hemorrhoids.

The main treatment for this condition is usually natural hemorrhoid cures, the temporary solution of creams and surgery, which is the final straw if nothing else works.

The cost of surgery is very expensive as it costs about $1000 and that price can go up depending on how severe the internal hemorrhoids are. As natural cures become more popular, surgeries such as hemorrhoidectomies are becoming a less used method. This is partly because surgery is painful and because recovery time can take up to 4 weeks with hemorrhoid surgery.

If you are looking for a way to relieve pain temporarily you may be interested in one of the many creams on the market for internal hemorrhoids. The cream helps reduce the pain and keep down inflammation, however they are not meant to cure internal hemorrhoids, so if you discontinue with creams, the hemorrhoids will return.

Natural treatments are now the most popular of hemorrhoid treatments. Many of these cures come with proven Chinese cures or natural products that you can find right in your local pharmacy or supermarket. These cures not only provide temporary treatment, they also give you a permanent cure to internal hemorrhoids.

Natural cures work much better than creams because they totally eliminate the problem and better than surgery because you don’t get the pain or the expense of having surgery. In addition they will give you the pain relief from internal hemorrhoids as well.

How to Establish and Attain Your Weight Loss Goals

by Matthew Roberts ~ April 10th, 2009

If your objective is to lose weight and maintain that loss permanently, then you should know that the way you approach your goal is the key to your success or failure. To approach your goals effectively, you must create your daily objectives and design strategies to implement your plan and analyze your progress. This analysis is crucial, because it allows you to adjust your plan based on its effectiveness.

What is a realistic weight loss target? First, recognize that your goal-setting must always be realistic in terms of the amount of weight you expect to lose in a certain time frame. If you choose an unattainable goal, you will soon become discouraged and give up. So, what can you do to make sure you choose a realistic target?

1. Avoid trying to rush your way into weight loss. You didn’t gain weight over night, and you shouldn’t expect to lose it over night either. Most professionals say that losing around 5 to 10 percent of your weight is a good target. As an example, try losing about 7.5 to 15 pounds for a starting weight of 150 pounds. This will help you stay healthy through the process.

2. Do a bit of math to figure out how quickly you can reasonably lose your goal weight. This calculation is important for your health. You should aim for no more than 2 pounds per week. Thus, a weight loss of 10 pounds should take at least 5 weeks, and you should allow at least 10 weeks to lose 20 pounds.

3. Set short term goals. Focus on incremental goals, like losing two pounds this week, instead of focusing on the longer term goal of 10 or 20 pounds. This will help you stay motivated and on task to get you through the day without straying from your plan. Remember that slow weight loss is also more likely to be a lasting weight loss, and you’ll be re-learning your eating habits to maintain your weight for the long haul. Changing your lifestyle is just as important as weight loss, because if you don’t make these changes permanent, the weight will come right back.

Another crucial factor is your ability to self-supervise.

Assess your results. Make note of your weight regularly. Daily or weekly weigh ins are most common. Do be aware that your weight will naturally fluctuate due to fluid intake and retention, among other factors. If you are not meeting your targets, your exercise level or diet will likely need to be adjusted.

Try writing a food journal. Studies show that keeping a food diary can help people double the amount of weight lost. A food journal can function as a map to help you see trends in caloric intake and patterns of food consumption that may inhibit your weight loss. This will also make it easier to identify problematic behaviors and make adjustments.

Weight loss takes time, and it’s important not to rush the process. If you do, you may end up giving up. By taking it easy, you are more likely to stay motivated to stick with it. Realize that weight loss isn’t just the road to a better body; it’s also an investment in a longer and healthier life.

Trampoline Exercises - A Great Way To Get Fit

by Ned DAgostino ~ April 10th, 2009

Sometimes kids know what adults don’t. And certainly any child will tell you that jumping on a trampoline is fun. But understand that trampolines are not just for kids. Adults are learning that bouncing is not only fun, but that trampoline exercises are a tremendous way to get healthy.

If you’ve ever attempted an exercise routine, chances are you quit because it became boring. It’s probably the main reason people don’t stick to them. But since trampolines are so much fun, there’s a better chance you’ll stay with the routine. And you’ll be losing weight and toning your muscles without the aid of a bunch of other exercise equipment.

Here’s why trampoline exercises are so good. First you get a great cardiovascular workout. Much like jogging, you’ll get your heart pumping and you’ll strengthen many of your vital organs. Your metabolism increases, making losing weight that much easier. Plus your blood flow increases. This results in more endurance, and also helps your body get rid of a lot of toxins.

And by consistently jumping you’ll be strengthening your leg muscles. Do you want to target your back muscles? Then just jump while keeping your legs straight. Add in arm motions, like swinging them with every jump, and you’ll help tone your arms as well. If you want increased strength you can add ankle weights or hold lightweight hand weights to increase resistance. But a word of caution, only add the additional weight after you are comfortable with your trampoline exercises.

Trampoline exercise can be especially helpful to people with back problems. The motion of jumping up and down will release tension and strain. And since these exercises are low impact, there’s little additional stress on your joints. Joggers often quit because of the constant pounding on their knees, ankles and feet. A trampoline removes this, and can be a great way for someone recovering from a leg injury to get back into exercising.

And it’s your body weight being used to tone and strengthen muscles, no additional weight is needed.

It’s been proven many times over that exercise is crucial at any age. Senior citizens can benefit from a trampoline as well. Just 20 minutes each day will give you a great workout without straining muscles, bones and joints.

Most people spend some time each night either watching TV or a movie on the DVD player. Use this time to also bounce on a trampoline. Instead of being a couch potato, you’ll be using this time to get rid of some calories, exercise your muscles, and increase your lung capacity. You won’t miss your favorite show, and you’ll be more healthy for watching it.

And because you’ll be having fun, there’s also a better chance you’ll stay with your workout program for a much longer time.
